Eye Opener: Online Learning Activities

  • Ashley: Calculate Your Auto Emissions
    • This activity was to inform us, as consumers, how much our own vehicles are emitting into the air.   The website provided was easy to follow and was simple to put in our car's information so it could calculate the results.
    • 1999 Lexus RX 300 4WD
      3L, 6 cyl., Automatic (4 speed), 4WD or AWD

      Total City Miles: 8,400
      Total Highway Miles: 5,600
      City MPG: 19 MPG
      Highway MPG: 22 MPG
Gallons of Fuel (City): 442.11 gallons
Gallons of Fuel (Highway): 254.55 gallons
Gallons of Fuel (Total): 696.66 gallons

    • NETZERO Calculations
      Total Pounds CO2: 13445.54 lbsTotal CO2 MT Emission: 6.1 MTTOTAL CO2 Credit Cost: $48.80

  • Elly: Gas Guzzling Cars
    • This was similar to the above activity.  The information of your personal vehicle was calculated and distributed to determine the total amount of CO2 emitted each year.
    • Your vehicle produces 0.92 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year.

  • Kara: Energy Dustbin
    • For this activity my score was 52
    • The resources to read up on were very helpful and informational.  It was a fun game tossing things back and forth into the garbage bin!

  • Lauren: Work Out Plan
    • This was a fun quiz.  It provided pretty general questions about how you feel you are fit.  I really like the routine she provided in her blog to incorporate in our daily routines.
    • You are 50%* fit!
Your about the average thin but not toothpick-like. Your about chubby but not fat. Your fine. Just work out a little and youll be in good shape.

  • Katie: Obesity & Your Everyday Life
    • BMI: 20...which falls under the normal weight group
    • Currently I am meeting my daily calorie intake.  However, not so much with the each of the food groups.  Always being on the go it's difficult to consume the adequate amount of fresh vegetables. I don't eat junk & when I need to buy my food I make sure that's it's a healthier choice, with fresh veggies, and definitely not fast food.
    • I found out I am consistently burning activities.  It's convenient because of teaching fitness and dance classes, I'm always "forced" into working out and staying active.  Not complaining though!

  • Danielle: Waste to Energy Crossword Puzzle
    • This was trickier than I thought!  There were definitely a few terms that I did not know.  It was easier, maybe being from duluth helped, to know some of the facilities around the community.  The resources provided were definitely needed to complete the crossword.

Eye Opener: Photo Essay

ABBY & RANGER'S ADVENTURES

Abby & Ranger riding in the car.  They know it's time for their walk.  They're so excited, they cannot wait to get to the park!
We're here!  They're waiting in the car so patiently...
(Ranger is in the red collar and Abby is in the pink collar)
And they're off!  Who's going to make it down the trail first?!
Here's our first stop- Chester Bowl. This is one of the newer spots that we've visited.
Our second stop- Bagley Nature Area.  This is one of Abby's favorites and Ranger's first time visiting.  They love running up the huge hills and steps to race to the lookout.
Here's our third favorite spot- Hawks Ridge.  When I was training for my marathons I would take Abby here.   They have the road blocked off at a certain spot, so than she's able to run off leash.  Here they are at the memorial, looking out across the city of Duluth.
Last but not least- Hartley Nature Center.  This is the one we visit almost daily.  It's close to home and have great trails!  Soon we'll be able to start our cross country ski adventures.  Abby and Ranger are waiting patiently...got to make sure they know who's in charge!
They're completely wiped out.  Back to the car...Abby is still smiling!  Ranger looks like he could tip over and sleep anytime now.
Back home- safe and warm.  They're second favorite thing...belly rubs!  Can you guess which one is which?

Eye Opener: Junk On the Brain

PART ONE: All definitions were found at Encyclopedia: Free Dictionary.  Very resourceful website!

  • antique- is an old collectible item
  • antiquing- is enhancing a piece's form or current state
  • junk- the remains of something that's been broken or no longer wanted
  • flea market- an open-air market selling cheap and often second-hand goods
  • thrift shop- sells used articles, especially clothing, as to benefit a charitable organization
  • upcycling- use of waste materials to provide useful products, transform it into something with greater value
  • resale shop- retail establishment operated by charitable organization for purpose of fundraising These terms deal with Environmental Health because we're not just recycling anymore.  We are RE-using these materials
PART TWO:
  1. These terms deal with Environmental Health because we're not just recycling materials, we are Re-using them.  We're taking products already made and making them into something bigger and better. They're not just going into the dumps.
  2. Goodwill International, INC
  3. I have used goodwill before.  However, I have never purchased anything from there.  I frequently bring old clothes and other goods to this location throughout the year.
PART THREE:
  • Holiday Craft:
    •  This one seemed alot of fun, especially with the holidays around the corner.  It takes an old, mismatched mitten and some outdoors pine and other pretty things.  It can be hung as a door decoration and a great, simple gift to those you care for!
  • Winter Green Fresh:
    • This one was especially interesting and could be used throughout the seasons.  It takes an old box spring and place small flower pot in the springs.  This showcased certain bulbs that were planted, but i'm sure you could plant whatever you please.  Use it as decoration and change it up throughout the year!
  • From Card Table To Wall Art:
    • I especially enjoyed this project.  I am always so interested in big art work for the place that I rent and each year you may have a new home to decorate.  All the walls are different sizes and need to be filled in different ways.  Big art pieces are not cheap!  This is an amazing, cheap(er) way to fill up those empty white spaces.  It takes an old card table, that has designs on it, and hang it up as your new masterpiece!  Love it!

Eye Opener: Environmental Working Group

The product that I chose to look up was my favorite, Covergirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara.  The ingredients within this product our linked to:
- cancer
- development/reproductive toxicity
- allergies/immunotoxicity
- use restrictions
- Other concerns for ingredients used in this product:
Endocrine disruption, Persistence and bioaccumulation,Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive), Multiple, additive exposure sources, Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs),Enhanced skin absorption, Contamination concerns,Occupational hazards, Biochemical or cellular level changes
I feel along with what we have learned about everything else so far...nothing is going to be good for us.  I can't believe something so small can lead to so many other hazardous things.  Although, each person's susceptibility is different & each of the ingredients is only a small amount, there is always that chance that something could happen.  So far so good though.  Maybe i'll have to take a look into other options and brands out there.  (For those of you who didn't know...The Whole Foods Co-op has there own line of makeup products!)

Eye Opener: CSPI

The eating green tour had lots of good facts.  I focused on reading more about the animals.  The cattle has a small lifespan.  They are being be as much "special" grain which causes them health problems & the cattle is producing more fat & so when we eat that meat, we also are intaking that excess fat.  They're brought to the slaughter house where millions are killed each year.  In general, the overall cleanliness of these animals & how they're taken care of is very dirty, wasteful, and causing more problems than we think.

I enjoyed the eating green calculator.  I went off of my last weeks eating habits (which weren't too good or healthy.)  I was pretty disgusted in how much manure was produced by the animals I eat.  I definitely was not expecting that information to be included.  But talking about waste/garbage, manure is a whole other factor of waste we have not really considered how to dispose of.  I think how much chicken/meat I eat a year might have been more effective of the burden it's causing...

Uh-oh!  I need help with my eating green score.  Whether it's my overall nutrition, environment, or animal wellfare that needs work i'm not sure.  I just didn't score so well.  I think again we can just relate it back to making sure we are used locally grown foods from local farmers & just being more aware of who and where the food we're eating is coming from.

Eye Opener: Ecological Footprint

One of the first quizzes that I took was about air pollution.  What my travel habits are doing to the environment.  I calculated my travel miles: home to school, school to work, work to home.  Calculated the total miles along with what kind of car, gas price, and type of gas gave me my results.  They showed that I'm actually not doing too bad!  They recommend though that I try to car pool, rather than driving alone & try walking/biking the smaller distances if I can.
I also took the ecological footprint quiz...this time my results weren't as good.  I'm doing very bad.  With all the extra services that our communities and businesses provide it's hard to balance out the ones that are unnecessary.  If I were to use less of my time traveling those small distances or trips and recycle more I would have much less to feel guilty about and take up less space on this planet.
When I looked over the last quiz, Carbon Footprints of our Nation.  We're also not doing so good as a whole.  We here in the United States are all about the services, manufactured goods, and the mobility to get there.  We are using up the most resources and doing nothing to replace them.  We are too caught up in the next big thing that is happening.  What happened to taking time to enjoy the place we live in.  Taking the time to enjoy what was created for us...not what is being taken over by our own creations...
