I read part three of this book. It included pages 151-176.
Part three included sections on: trees, magazines, books, and other paper products.
The most effective thing someone could do for our planet...plant a tree. Plant life is the one thing that allows us to survive here on earth and is helping to absorb the "bad" things such as air pollution and fossil fuels. We can continue to save trees by using our laptops, flash drives, and the new E-books that are available to us online. With our new technologies we are able to go paper free.
Many of us are very on top of our recycling habits. At school and other offices we need to continue this support. For every ton of paper that we take out, is saving over 380 gallons of petroleum. We must continue ways to reduce consumption and begin reusing as much paper products as possible.
One ton of magazine paper uses only 7.68 trees. We can make efforts in various ways to reuse book and magazines before they're recycled or write to editors to begin creating online subscriptions. Newspapers on the other hand use of 247,000 acres of forest to meet the demands of consumers. Again, it's common knowledge to recycle these products. Producing from recycled paper uses 30-35% less energy and generates 95% less air pollution than making paper from trees.
So in the end...Reuse Reuse Reuse...paper can be used as many different things before being put into the recycle bin. Be creative and continue with your recycling habits. :)
Not going to lie, I have probably the hardest time conserving paper. Yes I recycle, but I cannot make the switch to electronic everything. I am very "hand held" person when it comes to books and papers. I have to have something I can hold on to and write on. I have gotten better over the last few years, but I know there is room for improvement. One area I feel conservative is with magazines and newspapers though. I do not purchase these things in hard copies, instead I utilize the online options. I will definitely continue to try and conserve paper!
ReplyDeleteWe have reduce, reuse, recycle ingrained in our minds from elementary school. We probably are all conscience of recycling our paper, but we may over look reusing the paper before that step like you were describing. I will try to be aware of what I am using my paper for. I will try not be so wasteful with my paper because your book has some shocking statistics!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how something so simple gets over looked. I think that I do an ok job at recycling paper but I can always improve. Those are shocking statistics. Im glade that your book has so much cool information.
ReplyDeleteI wish that everyone saw recycling and reusing as easy as it actually is! There are so many lazy people that don't feel like separating paper from trash because it's "inconvenient" for them, or they think it "won't make a difference." Well every piece of paper counts! And it is so simple to just use your old notebooks from last semester that you haven't completely filled up, and continue on a new semester.
ReplyDeleteWhat makes me so mad though, is that some schools and restaurants take no initiative in even TRYING to recycle. That is where this system is going wrong..
It's hard to find ways to be creative with recycling but there are ways. Many children love to use old boxes and left over paper for forts and such. Or what about make your own paper out of recycled paper? Yes there are many ways. About planting a tree, Why don't ESG plant a or some trees on campus? just an idea.
