So I know lots of us are reading books about food and local farms and how we should be contributing to their success. For those of you who don't know we have our very own Farmers Market here on the UMD Campus. Every Wednesday! Actually, their just ended...it runs from May thru September, but it was amazing while it lasted! Their vegetables were my favorite. With the cold season coming around I love to make all sorts of soups and stews and warm things...this was the perfect place to find the best & freshest foods. It was also very interesting to see local people's talents. From their farming skills to a man who blows glass jewelry and other special things. You never know who you're going to meet and what you can learn from them! Thats another amazing part about using local farmers...you can build relationships and they'll treat you like and actual person, they'll want to help you and get you what you need...Here is the UMD Farmers link and some other upcoming events with local groups to check out! They include other ways to get active too in the environment...take the time to take in the fall fresh air, enjoy it while you can!
I really wish I could have taken advantage of the Farmer's Market. It sounds awesome. Especially with everything we are learning, I really want to eat more locally grown foods and really help those in the area. How were the prices at the Farmers Market? Expensive? Cheap or About right? Thanks for sharing about it :)
ReplyDeleteBummer, I wish I would've gotten something from there just once this year :( At least we have the option of having a co-op though!
ReplyDeleteMaybe they'll remain open longer since we're lucking out with such nice weather!! keep looking for posters/reminders around campus. Otherwise, wednesday head up to kirby by the bus stops & food courts to double check!
ReplyDeleteI walked past the market a lot this summer. I really wished I would have had time to see what they all had to offer! Fresh veggies is one thing I miss from home! It sounds silly, but you can totally taste the difference! Maybe I'll check it out next time I see them out there!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy seeing all the local farmers, entertainers, people, and children who attends UMD's farmers market. It is a lot of fun. I usually try to buy my cilantro there because they have big bundles at $2 each bundle. It's best in the summer with the variety of things they sell. All the pretty plants, romaine lettuces, and homemade goodies. Usually around this fall season they should be selling apples but I haven't seen it at all due to classes. Thanks Jamie for sharing this. Mary
ReplyDeleteI always stop around and check out the stands at our farmer's market. I think it's great that they share their homegrown and homemade vegetables and other items, and are actually sending a message to students by allowing them to eat locally if they are interested.
